The Academic Nature
The idea of luxury as something exclusive and extravagant is changing; today, the idea of luxury is associated with the possibility
for people to express their deepest values. Sustainable luxury is about going back to the basics of the old days meaning of luxury, a thought over purchase, a craft manufacture, and the beauty of materials in the broadest sense and respect for social and environmental aspects. This deeper approach implies and will imply a tirelessly search for knowledge and discovery and, mainly, understanding.
There are people with a profound perspective towards environmental and social issues and who are well motivated to “break” the rules and promote disruptive solutions to these issues, and most of them are entrepreneurs. Several authors have documented the relationship between personal values and sustainability, entrepreneurship and innovation. And, in practice, this was the perception in the process of the first and second editions of the Best Performance in Sustainable Luxury in Latin America Award.
These are transformational leaders that inspire, provide intellectual stimulus and care deeply about people and the environment. And leadership and inspiration are crucial to move towards sustainability.
Therefore, based on the experiences of both the nominated and the winning organizations, Miguel Angel Gardetti (Director of the Center for Studies on Sustainable Luxury) and María Eugenia Girón (Member of the Advisory Board of the Center for Studies on Sustainable Luxury and Executive Director of Observatorio de Productos Premium at IE Business School), are working on a book titled SUSTAINABLE LUXURY: Stories From the Field, that will be published in July 2014 by the English publishing house Greenleaf Publishing. This book describes the work of sustainable pioneers in the luxury sector putting in practice their knowledge and intuition in many different ways, to make a significant change in society. Although an inspirational book for other entrepreneurs, this book can be used -within an MBA program- in seminars on sustainability and/or corporate social responsibility, sustainable leadership, entrepreneurship, and business strategies.
This academic dimension adds a fully innovative nature to this Award.
